Spare Car Keys

One key is one bad day away from none. A spare cut and programmed today costs a fraction of an emergency callout later.

Only got one key?

A spare is the cheapest insurance you'll ever buy for your car.

Cutting a spare while you still have a working key is quick, cheap and boring — which is exactly what you want. We clone the transponder from your existing key, cut the blade to match, and test every button before you leave.

Lose that last key instead and the same car becomes an originate-from-scratch job with a callout attached.

Bring your working key in and most spares are done while you wait.

Everything you need to know

Spare car keys in Brisbane, explained

Why a spare is worth it before you need it

Almost every emergency callout we attend is a car with one key. That key gets lost, stolen, snapped or drowned, and a routine job turns into an urgent one — usually somewhere inconvenient, often after hours.

A spare cut in advance is a workshop job on your schedule. No callout fee, no waiting at the roadside, no risk of being stranded far from home.

How much does a spare car key cost?

A spare is almost always cheaper than replacing a lost key, because we copy the data off the key you already have instead of originating it from the vehicle.

What affects the price:

  • Key type — a plain blade, a flip remote, or a smart proximity key
  • Make, model and build year
  • Whether the remote buttons need programming as well as the chip

Call with your rego and we'll give you the number before you drive over.

How long does it take?

Most spares are cut and programmed in 20 to 45 minutes at the workshop. Bring the working key with you — that's what makes it quick.

Smart proximity keys take a little longer than blade keys, because the remote functions are programmed separately from the immobiliser chip.

Do I need the original key?

It helps a great deal, but it isn't essential. With a working key we clone it. Without one, the job becomes a lost-key replacement — still very doable, just longer and dearer.

If your only key is damaged or intermittent, get the spare done now while it still works.

Spare keys for fleets and dealers

We cut spares in volume for dealerships, rental fleets and trades running multiple vehicles. If you're managing more than a couple of cars, talk to us about doing them in one visit.

Bring the vehicles to Holland Park West, or we'll come to your yard.

Prices vary by make, model and build year. Call with your rego and we'll confirm before you come in.

The process

Four steps, most keys same day

2

We clone the chip

The transponder data is copied straight across from your existing key.

3

Blade cut to match

Cut on our machine to the car's original key profile.

4

Tested before you go

Start the car, check every button, confirm the alarm and boot.

Had my LandCruiser 76 key remote done here and couldn’t be happier. The service was excellent, pricing was very reasonable, and the whole process was smooth and professional. Definitely much better than dealing with random Facebook Marketplace mobile services. Highly recommend this place!

I recently used Tapsy Car Key Program and was genuinely impressed with the level of professionalism and efficiency they provided. They quickly programmed my car key without any hassle, saving me both time and money compared to going through the dealership.

Need help finding your VIN?

It's 17 characters, and it's closer than you think.

Look at the base of the windscreen on the driver's side, inside the driver's door jamb, or on your registration papers. It can also be stamped on the firewall at the back of the engine bay.

Send us a photo of it and we'll take it from there — the VIN tells us exactly which key your car was built with.

Frequently asked questions

How much cheaper is a spare than a lost key replacement?

Noticeably. Cloning from a working key skips the originating process and usually the callout, so you're paying for the key and a short workshop visit rather than an emergency job.

Can you cut a spare from a photo of my key?

No. A blade can sometimes be cut from a code, but the transponder chip has to be programmed to the car, so we need the vehicle present.

Do I bring the car, or just the key?

Bring the car. Programming talks to the vehicle's immobiliser, not only to the key.

How many spares can one car have?

Most vehicles accept several keys, though the limit varies by manufacturer. We'll tell you your car's limit before we start.

Can you make a spare for a keyless push-start car?

Yes. Smart proximity keys are programmed the same way, with an extra step for the remote functions.

Can you do it while I wait?

Usually. Most spares are finished inside an hour at the workshop.
